This basic recipe is easy and makes a big difference in flavor when the tomatoes are used in the Basic Tomato Sauce recipe, in chili or lasagna.

The first time I tried this recipe was when a friend had an abundance of homegrown tomatoes and I thought, why not make tomato sauce?


4 large tomatoes – chopped

1/4 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper (optional)

1 tablespoon fresh basil

Fresh rosemary, about 1 tablespoon

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

2-3 cloves garlic, chopped

2 T. olive oil


  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine tomatoes, onion, bell pepper and basil. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
